FOOTBALL.

OTAGO RUGBY UNION. The weekly meeting of the committee of the Otago Rugby Union was held last night. The president (Mr W. J. Wilson) occupied the chair. \ Mr J. Mitchell moved, in accordance with notice, that the disqualification imposed on !W. Choyce in 1921 for using insulting language to the referee in a match -played at Dunback be removed.—lt was pointed out that the term of disqualification would expire in 1924. A letter was received from the Eastern District Sub-union supporting the removal of the disqualification.—Members pointed out that the union must strongly support its referees, but that there might be mitigating circumstances in connection with Choyce’s offence. —It was decided to remit the unexpired portion of Choyce’s term and to recommend to the New Zealand Rugby Union that the player be reinstated as from date.

The University Club was given permission to visit Matakanui on Wednesday, August 8, to plav a match there. / Tno University Club was granted Cansbrook Ground for the annual match against Canterbury College, to be played on Wednesday, August 15. \ It was decided to ask the Ravensboume Club for, an explanation regarding an allegation that it had played a Southern Second Grade player in the match against the Union Fourth Grade team. The Southern Club to be also written to asking if tho player in question had played for its Second Grade team this season. Letters were received from the Otago Ladies’ Hockey Association and the Alhambra Football Club supporting tho union in its protest against any proposal to take the Oval for an Exhibition site. It was decided to play the Otago Boys’ High School-Waitaki Boys’ High School match at Carisbrook on Saturday as a cur-tain-raiser to the Kaikorai-Alhambra match. In connection with a request from _ the South Canterbury Uiiion_ that the University Club should break its journey either to or from Christchurch on the occasion of the match for the Payne trophy to play a match at Timaru, it was decided .that the committee could not see its way to arrange such a match. The secretary reported that the gate receipts for the University A-Kaikorai match amounted to £241 7s 3d. It was decided to reserve 250 seats for the first test match between New Zealand end New South Wales for the various Otago sub-unions and the Southland Union. It was decided to make a donation of £lO 10s to the Ladies’ Hockey Association, to assist in. paying the cost of the New Zealand tournament, which is to be held m Dunedin. EXCELSIOR CLUB’S APPEAL. A report 'was received from a sub-com-mittee of the union regarding ari appeal by" the Celtic Club (Oamaru) against the Excelsior Club playing E. Bartlett, as he had not secured a transfer from the Celtic. The appeal had been upheld by the North Otago Sub-union, and the Excelsior Club now appealed against this decision. The sub-committee reported that the North Otago Sub-union had not contravened any of 'its by-laws, and that the Excelsior Club’s appeal would tncrefore be dismissed. COUNTRY WEEK. It was suggested that in view of the arrangements made to hold a country week on August 15 and 18 not meeting with the favour *£ the Vincent, Tuapeka, Maniototo, and Tapanui Sub-unions, the country week should bo abandoned. The original proposal was that nine players-should be sent from each sub-union, and that the Vincent and Maniototo (combined) should be matched against Tuapeka and Tapanui (combined). A second match was to have been arranged between the four sub-unions combined and a metropolitan 1 team. Members pointed out that the uruon had always’ tried its best to foster football amongst sub-unions, and that it was to be regretted that the sub-unions had riot met the proposal more sympathetically.—The secretary stated that from what he could gather it was the Vincent Sub-union which was holding back the other sub-unions. After discussion it was decided to at once g’pt into communication with the subunions 'and ascertain their definite decision regarding sending nine men each to Dunedin. WANAKA CLUB’S APPEAL. The claim by the Wanaka Club for the match against Alexandra by default was dismissed: as tho matter was one of local control. The iWanaka Club had travelled 60 miles to play; Alexandra but there was no team to meet them. The letter from the Vincent Sub-Union stated that the Wanaka Club had been informed that the match had been nostporied, and yet it hod gone to Alexandra. FLAG MATCHES. It was decided to close the senior flag competition on August 4. It was decided to close the second grade competition on August 4, the Flag Committee to have the light to play a deciding match if necessary. The third, fourth, and fifth grade teams to continue playing in the meantime.

CHARITY MATCH. It was decided to inaugurate an annual Charity Cup match between the- champion team and the runners-up, the match to take place this year on August 18. Mr J, A. Ainge intimated that he was prepared to give a challenge cup for tho competition. . ,i The cup was accepted with thanks. UNIVERSITY A v. MARISTS. OTAGO FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION. The usual weekly meeting of the executive of the' O.'F.Ai was held in the secretary’s office last evening, Mr E. J. Anderson being in the chair. Mr Geo. R. Towart, hon. secretary, Boys’ Division, Canterbury Football Association, wrote advising that the annual triangular contest between Primary School representatives from Wellington and Otago would be played this year at-Christchurch on September 8, and a_sking if the Otago team would be competing. It was resolved that the matter be referred to the Schools’ Committee for favourable consideration. The hon. secretary, Canterbury Football Association, wrote with reference to his association sending a team to challenge for the Peter Dawson Cup, and suggesting September 1 as a suitable date for the match to be played at Dunedin. It was decided that Canterbury be asked to come down on August 29, , failing that, September 1 as suggested. In connection with the case of A. Fraser, who was suspended at last meeting until the end of the present playing season for ungentlemanly behaviour in the match Taieri v. Maori Hill, Mr Crawford, the Maori nilF delegate, desired to make an explanation, but the chairman ruled him out of order, saying that the case could only be rc-oponed by notice of motion. Mr Crawford then gave notice of motion to this effect.

Fraser then appeared before the meeting with respect to his behaviour towards the O.F.A. at last week’s meeting. The Chairman intimated to Fraser what had transpired at last week's, meeting after he (the player) had been asked to leave tho room, and informed him. of tho decision arrived at by tho 0.F.A., that he bo asked to attend and apologise. Fraser: No. lam not going to apologise until I get a fair hearing in connection with the other case. The Chairman: That case has been disposed of. Fraser: You “picked” on mo as soon as I came in. I will not apologise until I get a fair hearing in tho other case. Mr Brown asked if lie could ask the player a question. The Chairman: No. Mr Cameron then moved that tho player bo asked to retire. Mr M'Crprie seconded, and tho motion was carried. Fraser: You won’t want me back. Tho /Chairman: No. Fraser: Thank you. After the player had retired Mr Cameron moved, and Mr Rutherford seconded, that in?, plnyer ba suspended until the end of 1924 season. Mr Brown moved as an amendment, which was seconded by Mr James, that the matter be held iu abeyance for one week. Mr Crawford, speaking to the i amendment, said that he supported the amendment and said that the principal witness was not able to attend last week’s meeting owing to illness. ’The amendment was lost, five voting for and six against. The motion was then carried by six votes to two.

Regarding the visit of tho Chinese team to Australia this is now a private venture and as you are aware neither my association nor its members are prepared to assist financially any promoters outside of our game.” CHATHAM CUP. The hon. secretary, N.Z.F.A., advised that the council had definitely decided to adhere to the original rules whereby the senior club in each centre bo eligible to compete for the cup. It was decided that clubs be invited to challenge for the Chatham Cup. Mr F. Rutherford, bon. secretary. Referees’ Association, wrote in respect to defaulting referees, explaining that the prevailing epidemic was responsible for the non-appearance of certain referees.—Received. Mr Brown brought up the question of the North Island v. South Island match, which is due to be played in Dunedin this season. He moved that the council bo written to suggesting that instead of the Island match the team which represented New Zealand in the Third Test match be matched against the rest of New Zealand,-the game to be played in Dnuedin.—The motion was carried.
