In addition to the 30,000 trout recently placed in the Thames between Hampton Court and Staines, 348,000 general fish have been turned into the river by the Thames Angling Preservation Society. No such addition has been mode since 1863, when 76,000 young salmon, trout, charr, and grayling were placed in the river. “Just think you’re on the football field, and speak up so that everyone can hear.” said Mr ,A. M. Mowlem, 8.M., to a young man who was giving evidence in an indistinct voice at the- New Plymouth Magistrate’s Court. The reminder had the desired effect. The Christchurch Acclimatisation Society’s hatcheries have received up to the present 700,000 brown trout eggs for the re-slocking of the Canterbury streams. Last year one milion and a half eggs were hatched, and this year’s aggregate will probably be in that neighbourhood. The hatching period is about .34 days. The extent of the dairying industry in the Levin district may be gauged from the fact that the output of butter during the height of the season amounted to as much as four and three-quarter tons per day (says the Levin Daily Chronicle). A peculiar accident occurred at the miniature rifle range at Hawera recently, with the' result that Mr J. Blake, a well-known rifleman, had to be removed to the hospital (states an exchange). It appears that Mr Blake had fired five rounds, and had gone through the action of extracting the sighter, when a few minutes later his cleaning rod fell on to the trigger, and a cartridge exploded, the bullet lodging in his shoulder. The heavy rainfall this month, following a wot autumn, has kept the ground thoroughly saturated, and the effect of the severe conditions is reflected in the appearance of the stock in many localities.
