OPPOSITION OBSTRUCTION,
SINKING FUND BILL DISCUSSED.
Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright MELBOURNE, July 4. The Opposition is trying a new method of stonewalling by moving the adjournment of various questions. It is understood that the Government will insist on 'Monday sittings if this attitude is persisted in. The House - further discussed the Sinking Fund Bill, which it is proposed should be administered by a Commission consisting of the Commonwealth Treasurer, the Chief Justice of the High Court, the Governor of the Commonwealth Bank, and the Solicitor-General without fee. Such Commission, it was claimed; would prevent the fund being used by improvident Ministers. Mr Austin Chapman (Minister of Trade) announced that, with a view to meeting the meat shortage in the southern States, instructions would be issued to enable British as well as interstate ships to carry refrigerated meat from Queensland to southern ports.
Dr Earle Page (the Commonwealth Treasurer) stated the other day that the National Debt stood at £412,000,000, of which £364,000,000 was war indebtedness. It was proposed to extinguish this in 50 years by an annual contribution of £1,250,000 from the Consolidated Revenue, together with half the profits of the Commonwealth Bank, and any profits from other sources.
