ASCOT GOLD CUP. Happy Man, ridden by Smyth, won the Ascot Gold Cup by a short head from Situnan (Weston), who was a length, ■ahead ot Flechois (Jennings). The King and Queen received a tremendous ovation irom ttw> crowd, which was a record. Tho weather was brilliant. Mr Hardy, the owner of Happy Man, states that the horse was twice vainly offered for sal© at £SO. HORSE OWNERS AND BREEDERS. Tho annual meeting of- the Hors© Owners and Breeders’ Association (of which we received no notification) was held on Thursday night, Hr R. Green presiding. The chairman quoted statistics in support of tho contention that racing is far too heavily laden with taxation, and he predicted that unless relief was immediately forthcoming many of the smaller clubs must go out of existence. Ho congratulated the owners of the Otago metropolitan area upon their success this racing season, and he expressed the hope that they would continue to be successful. All Slate primary schools’ matches arranged for to-day have been postponed. BILL ARDS CHAMPIONSHIP. The New Zealand billiards championship is being played in Dunedin this year for the first time. The fixture will be under the control of tile Returned Soldiers’ Association, and will bo played on the standard match table belonging to tho club. Play will commence on July 24 and should continue for approximately 10 days. Tho winner will take the title of New Zealand amateur champion and also a gold medal presented by the British Billiards' Association. Inquiries have already been received from Wellington, Cmiaichnrch, and Auckland, and several well-known local amateurs have signified their intention of competing. The points in the preliminary and semi-final games are 666, to be scored in one session, and the final is 2000 up, to be played in three sessions. ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.
