SUPREME COURT.
(Per United Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, June 22. In the Supreme Court to-day Michael Doyle was tried on three charges—manslaughter, assault with intent to commit bodily harm, and assault causing bodily harm. Ho pleaded not guilty. The cases arose from the death of William Henry Simpson, an able seaman on the steamer Kaituna, on May 11, at the hospital, following a surgical operation in connection with injuries to his shoulder, received in a brawl on the steamer on the night of April 2. The evidence for the prosecution alleged that the accused assaulted and threw the deceased over his shoulder, causing a dislocation of the shoulder, which lacerated the blood vessels, causing internal haemorrhage, also that death was duo to the shook of the operation, anaesthetic, and loss of blood. After throe hours’ retirement the jury acquitted the accused on all the counts. Patrick Collins, who was committed for sentence on two charges of obtaining money by valueless cheques at Greyniouth, received nine months’ imprisonment on each count, and was remanded to Wellington on a charge of forgery at Pahiatua.
