(Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 21. The premises of Messrs George Fowlcls (Ltd.), drapers, 'Mieen street, were entered last night, and small change, amounting to a little over £6. was abstracted from the cash registers. No attempt was made to remove stock. An Astronomic#! Society was formed at a meeting to-night, and Professor H. W. Begat- was elected president. HAMILTON, June 21. In the Supreme Court to-day George King, a former public works overseer at Aria, found guilty of forging public works vouchers, wag sentenced to 18 months’ hard labour, and ordered to pay £l5O towards tlje cost of the prosecution. The judge said that this kind of thing was becoming a scandal in the public service. Samuel Richard Johnson, a farmer at Owhango, was awarded £SOO damages against Maurice Flynn for the seduction of his daughter.
PALMERSTON NORTH, June 22. At a conference of representatives of the great majority of agricultural and pastoral associations of the North Island, it was decided to form a united federation. The chief objects are to secure uniformity of regulations in governing shows and to assist producers forwarding stock. In the Police Court this morning Victor Kirner and James Scorringe, escapees from the Weraroa Training 'Farm, pleaded .guilty and were committed for sentence in the
Supreme Court, Wellington, on two charges of breaking and Entering and theft. Kirner had only been committed to Weraroa following similar charges with another escapee at Palmerston North when he again escaped. DANNBVIRKE, June 22. Thomas Henry Jones was further remanded till Tuesday next on a charge of misappropriating funds. Bail was forthcoming. WELLINGTON, Juno 22. A charge against the manager of the Working Men’s Club of selling liquor after
hours was dismissed by Mr Page, the magistrate, to-day. The evidence of the chief witness for the prosecution was. said his Worship, very unsatisfactory. He had given one statement to the police and another in court. The charges had not been substantiated, but the case was on the border line. In the court to-day Ngan Chong, for keeping a common gaming-house in Plaining street, was fined £SO, in default two months’ imprisonment. Chow Dick and John SmallBridge, for being found on the premises, were each fined £2 and costa. The police asked for a substantial penalty in the case of Ngan Chong, as in spite of numerous prosecutions and heavy fines pakapoo still flourished.
BLENHEIM, June 22. Arthur Charles Peterson, on a charge Of breaking and entering Findlay’s pharmacy and stealing £4O odd, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. He was committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence.
