A COWARDLY ASSAULT.
VICTIM’S CONDITION SERIOUS. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 21. In the Police Court a fireman named Joseph Thurston, aged 47 years, was charged with assaulting George Craighead, fourth engineer of the steamer Arawa,_ ou the voyage from, Panama, by striking him on the head with a large spanner. The evidence showed that Craighead gave accused instructions to make a signal to another fireman in the forehold, and that accused refused; and it was alleged that when Craighead turned away the accused struck him heavily on the back of the head, causing serious injury. The_ ship’s doctor described Craighead’s condition as verv serious. The accused pleaded guilty, and waa committed for sentence. In a statement to the police he said the assault was committed on (he spur of the moment, and he was sorry immediately afterwards.
