PITCAIRN ISLAND
VISITED BY REMUERA. AN AFFECTING EXPERIENCE. On a former occasion of the steamer Remueru calling at Pitcairn Island, a sum of money was entrusted to Captain Cameron with which to purchase corrugated iron for roofing the cottages of the inhabitants, and when the Remuera arrived in England, John Lysaght (Ltd.), generously undertook to supply three fifties the amount that could bo covered by the purchase money. This was landed at Pitcairn recently on tho Remuera’s voyage from Southampton to Auckland, tho islanders being delighted with the result of their investment. ■lt was fined weather when the steamer hove to about a mile off shore, and the boats which put off from the island contained a number of women and children, who rejoiced in the opportunity to explore the big snip. The visitors brought baskets of delicious fruit, flowers, and necklaces for sale and barter, and were made the recipients of many gifts of clothing from the passengers, who 'pv’ere greatly interested in the romantic history and the charming, childlike manners of these isolated people. “God Be With You Till We Meet Again,” sang tho Pitcairners, as, having returned to their boats, they watched regretfully . the drawing away of the liner that had brought a few hours of such joy to their simple hearts.
