ALEXANDRA NOTES

JFrois Oub Own Uohbespondentj ALEXANDRA, May 31So far tile weather has not been at all like the usual wintry weather to be expected at this time of the year. Skating 1 had been in operation for a week or mors this time last year. At the beginning of the week the ground was white with frost, with ioe [ on the water, but the days are stiu comparatively mild. The hills are u* ' v lth a thick coating of snow, and rabbiters in the high back country have nun a good deal of broken time from unfavourable weather. The fruit season, now about past, has not been a satisfactory one from the growers point of view. Prices have been poor and the demand has not been equal .o supply, hence Quantities of fruit ■m many cases never left the orchard, it not being worth while sending the fruit forward to the market, the prices not being at a payable standard. This is an unsatisfactory position for both growers and public, ana tne only consolation to Central Otago growers is the fact that growers in other parts of the dominion had a worse experience than they had. /he district has sent forward many entries to the fruit section of the Winter anew. Last year the Alexandra and Earnscleugh aistncts sent forward 200 entries,’ and gained nearly 100 prizes. Mr H. Werner, of Alexandra, received the G. and . Young challenge shield, and naturally ne is endeavouring 'to retain possession °r another year, in which effort the district wishes him the best of good luck. A large number of the residents are making th ®.journey to Dunedin on this occasion. Winter sports are in full operation—football, hockey, and golf all receive the attention of their numerous patrons. To tile ladies’ hockey tournament, to be held in Dunedin next week, the Clyde Club is sending a team to compete in the A Grade, and the Alexandra District High School a team for the B Grade. TVliile there has been no definite progress made in regard to the supply of hydroelectric power for the district, the District Electric Power Board has not been idle. Expert opinion has been obtained in regard to two probable sources of supply. The board decided not to taxe up the option which it had received over the power plant and property of the Eamscleugh Dredging Company, and the board are at present negotiating with the Teviot Power Board as to the probability of securing power from the Teviot scheme. The costliness of a. transmission line from Teviot' to this district is the big financial hurdle.
