A FARMER AND HIS MONEY.
AND THE SEQUEL. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 31. At the City Police Court to-day Reginald Benjamin, aged 30 years, labourer, and Trevor Leonard Richard Cunningham, aged 23 years, a taxi driver, were charged with having, on April 18, obtained £22 Irom George Bavington Rowe by falsely representing that Benjamin was a bookmaker. Complainant, a farmer near Pokeno, said he arrived at Auckland on the morning of April 18, and had not known either of the accused before that day. He hired Cunningham’s taxi, and by him was introduced to the other accused, who was described as a bookmaker, another name being given. Witness took a double on Scotch Mixture and Birkie at 56 to one, giving Benjamin £l. He also had' a pound on Dean Dillon, engaged at the trots two days later. In an hotel accused advised complainant to have a lump on Quest, compering at Manawatu races that day. Witness gave accused a £2O cheque to put on Quest. Later he endeavoured to stop payment, but was too late. Quest ran second, but lie received no money. Both accused pleaded not guilty, and reserved their defence. They were committed for trial, bail being allowed.
