THE TAIERI DRAINAGE TRUST.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,—l notice that Mr J. T. Gibson has- ..".; been appointed to the position of clerk 'tcr * the Taieri Drainage Trust. I presume this. is the Mr Gibson who acted as chairman i, for some considerable time to the old Drains,- ~" age Board, arid who was mainly responsible V for the construction of the contour channel, _ < which has proved a moat costly work and a " disajDpointment to its most ardent sup- * t porters. Yet another of Mr Gibson's monu-_'' ' ments is the costly office erected by the,' v board at Mosgiel, and sold later at a. heavy _ loss. Wo have a right to expect w little fairplay from the Drainage Trust, and applications should have been called for the poai-; tion of clerk.' If Mr Gibson was the most qualified of those who then applied, by all , means he should receive the position, but I 1 - say without hesitation—and my opinion is '* -, shared by a largo number of ratepayers—' -' that instead of the board controlling the ' , clerk, the clerk will control the board. Th« - " ratepayers cannot undo what has been done,>but they can surely at least stop some ' t& ' * the needless waste of money that is going' on, and help to dc works which the present » board seems to think unnecessary.—l am, - "» etc., Tahhi Batbpaym. - -Taieri, May SO.
