OBITUARY.

ME EWEN CAMERON, N.Z. RAILWAYS. Lata yesterday afternoon news came through to Dunedin of tho death of Mr Eweu Cameron, district traffic manager of railways, in a private hospital in Wellington. Mr Cameron had only just been appointed to the position here, and on the Saturday before last he left for Wellington to attend the annual conference of railway managers. At that time he appeared to be in his usual health, but shortly after his arrival in Wellington ho took ill, ami was confined to a private hospital till his death took place at 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The late Mr Cameron was a Southland boy, having been born in Invercargill in 1867, in which town he was also educated. He entered the railway service as a cadet at Invercargill in 1883, and in 1895 became chief goods clerk there. Four years later he took up the position of station-master at Riverton for a short time, and then was transferred to a similar position at Rivcrsdale. From Riversdale ho was promoted in 1901 to be clerk in the traffic manager s office in Dunedin, where he rose to be cnief clerk in 1915. Subsequently he became assistant traffic manager in Dunedin. In 1919 he was appointed district traffic manager at Greymouth, where he remained until ho returned to Dunedin about a month ago to take up the position of traffic manager. Iho late Mr Cameron was a man held in the highest esteem by the staff with whom he was associated and indeed by all who knew him Ho was recognised as one possessing not only marked ability in his work but great tact in the exercise of his duties, and his sudden passing will be keenly felt by a wide circle. His wife, who predeceased him several years ago, was a daughter of the late James Bridge, of Invercargill. He is survived by a grown-up family consisting of one son and three daughters. The son, Mr D. H. Cameron, is a medical student who has just completed his course.
