There was a narrow escape from a very serious accident at the Hook River bridge on Thursday night (says the Timaru Post). A car, driven by a North Canterbury resident, skidded at the approach to the bridge and nose-dived into the river, a distance of about 20ft, carrying witli it about 50ft of the bridge railing. The driver escaped injury, but his passenger, Mr M. Corliss, was found to he suffering from a fractured thigh and two fractured ribs. Assistance was soon forthcoming, and Mr Corliss was removed by the Waimato ambulance to Henderson’s private hospital. The car, a six-cylinder Buick, was badly wrecked.
