ST. KILDA BOROUGH COUNCIL

The regular meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council, held last evening, was attended by the Mayor (Mr C. Todd), CTs Dove, Telfer, Longworth, Adam, Mercer, Leary, Fleming, Edgar, and Kilpatrick. Mr .W. Wright wrote, drawing attention to the state of sections adjoining his residence in Prince ‘Albert road. - They were a lake of stagnant water, and the stench from them was unbearable. The council or the Health Department should take steps to compel (ho owner to fill in the sections or have them drained.—-It was moved that the matter bo referred to the Health Department, but the acting clerk stated that the * department did not regard it as a matter for which it was responsible.—Referred to the Health Department with a request that the board take action. Mrs Golding wrote complaining of the insanitary condition of, vacant sections at tlio corner of Victoria road and Victoria street, at Tahuna. due to storm water accumulating on them, and affecting the health of residents. —Referred to the Health Department. Tile .District} Telegraph Engineer wrote stating that the estimated cost of aerial wiring for the fire alarm bell connections for six additional houses would be £2O, exclusive of cost of bells and internal wiring. The maintenance of the bell circuit would be increased from £3 to £5 5s per annum.— Consideration deferred. The ' Drainage Board wrote that in regard to the Driver street storm water conduit it was hoped to shortly replace it with a now concrete conduit, in connection with the work now authorise ! to be commenced in New street". In regard to Ferguson street the engineer had been authorised to give it necessary attention. The Drainage engineer forwarded a sketch of the work in Driver street. He asked for suggestions, mostly with regard to small matters such as rounding of edge of concrete, grass plots alongside, etc. —Referred to the Works Committee. Mr T. King wrote asking permission to remove eight loads of sand or soil away that had been thrown up on Driver street by the Drainage Board. —Declined. Tho Secretary of the A. and P. Society wrote that his society would take an early opportunity of consulting Mr Besley, assistant railway engineer) with regard to the pronosed railway deviation through Culling Park.—A later communication was forwarded with a tracing in connection with the proposed deviation, which it was understood, had been approved by the local district engineer.—lt was pointed out that it was merely-a right of’wav through the park that the council was giving; solicitor’s oninion to bo obtained. The Hospital Board wrote intimating .that the board bad declared the sum of £64.575 tho amount estimated as necessary for carrying out it» operations for the ensuing year and £35,000 as a portion thereof to be levied on contributin'* local authorities. The lovv on the council for tho current year was £ls62.—Received. Mr M. H. Seddon, late councillor, asked that an application of his bo returned to him.—‘Request granted. Twenty-three ■ residents of Grove street wrote complaining of the condition of the storm water channels and mud tanka in Grove street between Market street and Queens drive, in times of heavy rain.—Mr fi. Clark wrote similarly.—To be notified that, the work was being attended to. Mr W. L. M'Evoy forwarded a letter concerning Grove street, which he asked should be sent on to the Drainage Board. This dealt with a lack of storm water provision in Grove street, between Market street and Queens drive.—Referred to the Drainage Board. - • . ■■ The Inspector reported on work done in the' borough and stated that he intended during the • next fortnight to go on with: Chapman street, so as to aeust the Drainage Board in its operations—Received.
