ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

(Pee United Press Association.) AUCKLAND. May 28. The body of a -man, unidentified, gbout 60 years old, was found drowned in the harbour. Tattooed on the right forearm was “ILL.” over the device of clasped hands.

MR SHAND’S DEATH. An inquiry touching the death of Mr Charles Shand, killed in a level crossing accident at Kakapuaka, near Balclutha, on i'riday forenoon, was held at the residence of deceased before Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M., coroner. Evidence of identification was given by Joseph Shand. farmer, Hillend, a son of deceased, and by Dr Stenhouse, Balclutha. The doctor’s evidence was to the effect that deceased had died about 15 minutes after being pitched from his trap when it was truck by the engine of the express. The deceased struck a gatepost, and the body showed considerable bruising of the right forehead and the right eye and the right nostril was bleeding. Therewere no other gross injuries of importance evident. Pie formed the concluiion that death was due to violent contact of the head with soma object. Constable Weir asked for an adjournment until further inquiries could be made and the evidence of the driver and fireman of the train procured. 'Hie Coroner accordingly adjourned the inquest till a date to be fixed later. It is probable that the conclusion of the inquiry will be held in Dunedin, where both of the locomotive men concerned live. FATAL SAWMILL ACCIDENT. The police have been advised that Robert Morris, aged 45, who- is believed to ue a single man, died at Owaka on Saturday night, the result of injuries received on that day in coming into contact with a circular saw at Latta Bros.’ sawmill. FALL FROM A CART. Walter Watt, aged 22 years, who is employed as a carter by Messrs Spencer, and Dunkley (Ltd.), was admitted to the Dunedin Hospital yesterday, suffering from injuries tr> his chest, the result of a fall from his cart.
