Following upon a conference' bn ifretiday morning between the Hikurangi Miners’ Union delegates and the owners, the.delegates reported; to a meeting of the union - yesterday that the owners adhered to'-the principle of reducing the number of'/employees by dismissing those most recently employed, and would not accept balloting instead. Thereupon, the members ol .the union decided to strike, leaving it to-the owners to make the first move m negotiating for an adjustment. . The decision affects ail mines at Hikurangi, including Wilson’s, which supplies obal for the'large cement works at Portland. Altogether 100 men are idle. The miners allege victimisation. The president of the Miners’ Union wfcs one of men discharged.
