TAIERI RIVER TRUST
After the usual business at the meeting of the Taieri River Trust yesterday tho following business was transacted: — Tenders were accepted for repairs to Blair’s wing dam at 2s 9d a yard. It was resolved that the bank at Otokia break be reinstated up to the Bft level, and that all breaks reported be attended to by putting on teams, starting at the bottom and working up to the top. The engineer was asked to report on the establishment of still-ways on the contour channel.
Tenders are to be called for the repairs to all three breaks in the river embankment.
The clerk was instructed to telegraph tho Prime Minister and ask fo.t; his permission to raise tho new bank to the level recommended by ti c New Zealand Rivers Commission.
The engineer was instructed to prepare an estimate of the damage, and apply to the Government for a subsidy of £ for £. . The chairman, engineer, and clerk were asked to arrange to have the Mosgiel telephone exchange kept open all night at flood time.; and connection kept up with all .Bureaux on the Taiori, at Hindoo, and at Middiemarch. It was decided to ascertain what height the department would require the new Ilenley-Otolda bank to bo to comply with the section in the local Act which nrovided that no v/ork that was- likely to affect the railway was to bo constructed without the consent of the Minister of Hallways. On Mr Marshall’s motion the resolution that the present arrangement concerning the maintenance of culverts and water openings was cancelled, and it was decided to treat each future application on its merits. A vote of thanks was passed to the engineer (Mr B. B. Houston) for the excellent service he had rendered to all and sundry during the flood.
