A WINTRY WEEK END. The oold rain, -which on Friday threatened to play havpo -with outdoor sports oh .Saturday, fulfilled its promise, and the oonditiana on Saturday were bleak and wintry. TJho heavy south-easterly soualls, mixird with hail, that swept across from the, ocean fortunately did not last, and the total rainfall was inconsiderable. The guage at the Musselburgh pumping station at 9 a.m. on Saturday registered only .280 for the previous 24 hours. Nevertheless the grounds were so soaked and the conditions so unpleasant that the trots and all football fixtures had to be abandoned. At 10 o’clock on Saturday morning the news from Middlemarch was that the Taieri had dropped 2ft as compared with 8 o’clock the previous evening, when a rise Of sfb had b'6en reported. At Outram the position on Saturday morning was, that the : river was sft 6in above normal, and it was estimated that it would have to rise to Bft or 9ft to cause serious trouble. The margin of safety - further down the Plain at Otokia was considerably smaller, as there are still great gaps in the banks, so far only , partially repaired, and the waters there are practically tidal. , The Telegraph Department received idformation from Middlemarch' on Saturday to the effect that there had been no alteration in the Taieri River • since that morning. BAD WEATHER IN THE NORTH. .Piw United Poms Association.! CHRISTCHURCH, May 5. A spell of wintry weather continues. Heavy rein-from the south fell throughout the night, and continued to-daV. A heavy south-east sea is running on the coast. The ferry steamer Mararoa must have felt the full effects of the gale, for she is not expected to arrive at Lyttelton till ,5.30 p.m.— about eight hours over her usual time.
