GENERAL NEWS.

The Hope of Dunedin Tent held its usual fortnightly meeting on Monday in Kroon’s Hall. There was a large attendance erf members, and, in the absence of the C.R., Bro. A. H. Walkinshaw occupied the chair. It was announced that the Hope erf Dunedin Tent had won the progress banner for the past year. This banner is competed for annually by the various tents throughout the province, and is awarded to the tent which initiates the most members during the year. The tent is striving to regain the coveted banner, as five members were initiated during the evening and two candidates were proposed. The resignation of Bro; W. F. Kempton as trustee was accepted with regret, and as a token pf the esteem in which he is held,’ he was the recipient of a travelling rug presented,, on behalf of' the members by D.G.R. Bro. R. Farrant. Bro. Kempton has held the office of trustee for over 18 years, ' during which time he has carried' out his duties in a faithful and energetic manner. Bro. Kempton feelingly replied and returned thanks for the manner in which the members had expressed their appreciation of his sendees. Ijle regretted exceedingly having to relinquish his office as trustee, but: the reason was on account of his removal to Invercargill. He intimated, however, that ‘he Woifl(| : .'still remain a member, of the Hope .of Dunedin Tent, as he-is one of its oldest members. At the conclusion His reply, Bro. Kemp-, ton received-all ovation., The quarterly balance sheet, which-was read and adopt showed that the tenths in a very sound condition financially -and is still flourishing, and D.C.R. Bro. ‘ Farrant, as auditor, congratulated; the tent upon its success. At the conclusion of the business, the item on the syllabus—brothers’ surprise—was earned out, and all enjoyed an hour’s entertain-, rnent, the brothers providing refreshments. There was a fair attendance at the quarterly evangelistic meeting of the North-, East- Valley branch of the Women’s Chris 1 dan Temperance Union, - held last’ Thursfl day in the Institute. Mrs Peart, the prosh, dent,, was in the chair. After. Scripture reading and prayer, the Rev. O. Brooks gave a most helpful address, taking his text from Job xiv, 19. The president and Mrs Elliot were congratulated on their appointments to the North-East Valley School Committee. The secretary was instructed to convey to Mrs J. Coombes, an honoured member, the union’s good wishes for a pleasant trip abroad. Monona of sympathy were passed with three members on account of the death of relatives. A welcome was extended to Mrs Grant, from Wanganui Union, and a new member was -enrolled. It was decided to hold the next meeting on May 14. The meeting then closed with prayer.
