DEATH OF CANON GOULD. JFbom Oub Own Correspondent.) ' AUCKLAND. May 1. Canon Gould, one of the oldest and bestknown of the clergy of the Anglican Church in New Zealand, who died yesterday at Gisborne at the ago of 96 years, arrived in Now Zealand as a young man of 21 in the year 1848, being a passenger to Auckland by the ship Clara. On his arrival he took up work at Bt. John's College, where ho had charge of the boy students. After being at St. John s for four years he was ordained by Bishop Solwyn, and he then went to Russell, m ■which district he was stationed for am years. Ho was then transferred to Otahuhu, where he remained for the Jong period of 42 years. It was shortly after his arrival at Otahuhu that the Waikato war broke out, and he served as chaplain with the troops for some time. He also for many years paid quarterly visits to the Kaipara. and Northern 'Wairoa districts, then in the early stages of settlement. tie had many varied and interesting experiences in those early days, and on one occasion he walked from Auckland to Rotorua. A diary of his experiences was kept ny Canon Gould, and this made an interesting record of the life of the church and the progress of the settlement in the early times. Unfortunately it was destroyed with other personal Wongmgs in a lire that took place in a house in which his property was' stored at Otahuhu after his retirement from the charge 'of the parish. To the last, notwithstanding his groat age, Canon Gould retained his vitality m a • wonderful manner, and until quite recently ho was able to work in his garden Ho has been a widower since 1887. OU large family, five sons and eight daughters survive him. ’
