DUKE AND UNIONIST
A NOVEL GREETING. LONDON, April 19. “Lei me take you inside, sir, and initiate you into the details of Bolshevik organisation,” was the greeting of Mr Brownlie, president of the Amalgamted Engineering Union, to the Duke oi York, when the latter, as president of the Industrial Welfare Society, visited the union’s headquarters at Peckham. The Duke laughed heartily and shook hands with the members ot the union s executive. Mr Brownlie, in a speech, said that this was the first time a member of the Royal Family had visited a, trade union headquarters. Ho explained the activities of the union in order t/O show that the benefits it conferred were in no way chiefly connected witli strikes. He handed the Duke copies of reports saying : “Read them some pleasant Sunday al tern con.”
The Duke replied, and then inspected the buildings. He asked questions about details, Mr Brownlie continuing to supply information, including the fact that every member of the union-was registered by card index.
