SOUTHLAND v. OTAGO. FINE SCORE BY LOCAL TEAM. The return match between Southland and Objo war. commenced at the Caledonian Ground yesterday attornoon. (in the match at Invercargill Otago won by HkJ suns.) boiunland were not strongly represented, their team including a couple ol juniors, and moreover they had had to journey up from Invercargill in the morning. The sun shone brightly at the commencement ot' the match, but the sky soon became overcast and a strong cold north-oast wind blow across tiro ground. The wiekot was easy and the outfield slow. Tiro ground tielding of Uio visitors was good in patches, but their rotyrtia to the wrekot wore wry erratic. Garland won the toss and decided to put his side in. The opening batsmen wore. Worker and Duncan, and they played the fust bowler, Fcgo, and also Dynes, with plenty of oonlidonce. With the score at ol Giozier relieved Dykes at the grandstand end. When the score stood at 40 Fogo had sent down 48 balls tor 15 runs, throe of the six overs being maidens. After he had made 23 Worker was smartly run out when trying to got a third run from a log stroke by Duncan, Giozier returning well to the wicketkeeper, Sparks. 1 —23—59. Cherry was the incomer. A Hamilton relieved Fogo. Duncan hooked his first ball for a brace anti off drove his next for three, and Cherry the tilth ball for four, and played out the rest of the over. Brinsley then reached forward to Fogo, missed the ixtll, and was clean bowled. 2—6—171. Binney was the incomer. Galland got three fours in Austin’s next over, the total scored off the over being 16. Fogo kept pegging away at the other end, and his deliveries required careful watching. Crosier relieved Austin and Galland had a narrow escape from being run out, A. Hamilton returning tho ball smartly to Crozior. who, however, failed to hold it. Galland brought tho score to 200 with a hook off Crozier, for a couple. Otago had now been batting two hours and 20 minutes. Galland was dismissed in the same over, Ibw. 7 —56—201. Torrance was (he incomer, and when tho score had been taken to 210 Binney was completely beaten by Crozior. 8—12—210. Dougins was the next man in. Fogo, who had sent down 24 overs, with one spell, now gave way to Holz, nine runs coming from tho new bowler’s first over. Walsh relieved Crozier at the railway end. and Lynch relieved Holz at the grandstand end. Nineteen runs came off Lynch’s over, but Lynch should have got a wicket with his last ball, Douglas being dropped at point, A. Hamilton came on again in place of Walsh, and Torrance—who was batting in his most vigorous style—hit the first two balls over tho fence. His third ball he hit high to Dykes on the off boundary, but the fieldsman dropped it. Douglas hit a single and a four and from tho over 15 runs were scored. Torrance bit his fourth ball from Lynch over the fence in front of the press stand where Bond, who had just come on tho ground, ran forward and made a neat catch amidst applause. Torrance was doing some clean hitting, and the field were kept busy. Torrance made himself top scorer with a brace off Lynch. Torrance was disabled for a moment ot two, a straight drive from Douglas hitting him on the arm and then striking him in tho face. Torrance was then smartly stumped by Sparks. 9 67—310. The two batsmen had put on exactly 100 runs. Cook was the last man in. Fogo had another turn at the bowling crease, 11 _ corning from tho over. The Otago innings, which had commenced at a quarter past 2, closed at 10 minutes to six. Tho score of 344 is tho highest made by Otago this season, the next highest being 331 made in the abandoned match with Wellington. Details: OTAGO. First Innings.
