STOPPAGES CAUSE SHORTAGE. SEVERAL STEAMERS LAID UP. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, March 29. Constant stoppages at the collieries on the Northern fields have brought about a coal shortage, and a number of steamers are laid up as a consequence. A deputation of miners will wait on Mr Bruce to-day to discuss the causes of the stoppages. The coal owners have decided, in view of the Coal Tribunal declining to reduce wages, that the question of the price of coal should he postponed for the present. ADVICE TO THE MINERS. SYDNEY, March 30. (Received March 30, at 5.5 p.m.) Mr Bruce informed a deputation of coal miners that he was unable to , suggo; t a remedy for the intermittency of work at Newcastle. It the miners persisted, in stoppages the Government would consider the withdrawal of the tribunal. He advised the miners’ representatives to ensure continuity, and then matters would right themselves.
