THE PROPOSED SALT TAX. GOVERNMENT’S ACTION CRITICISED. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright DELHI, March 24. ’ After a discussion which lasted five hours, the Council of State accepted by 18 of a majority the Government’s proposed salt tax, which will now go back to the Legislative Assembly for reconsideration. Protests are being made T 1 over Die country, and tho chief whip of the Democratic Party has issued a most urgent whip stating that grave constitu-' tional changes will be caused by the Government’s action in reintroducing the salt tax in the Upper House after it had been negatived in the Lower House. The whip states that the reforms are in danger of becoming wrecked.—A. and N.Z. Cable. RECALCITRANT TRIBESMEN. FRONTIER OPERATIONS. DELHI, March 24. Operations against tho recalcitrant tribesmen in the Razmak and Wana districts are proceeding under difficult conditions. There have been a number of casualties as a result of the enemy’s sniping. A considerable number of the tribesmen have been rounded up or have surrendered.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
