GOVERNOR'TO MISSIONARY
A GRATIFYING TRIBUTE. A striking tribute to the influence of Chris- 1 tian missionaries in civilising and pacifying a wild native people' has recently been paid to tho representatives of the Sudan United Mission, who have been working for several years past at Heiban. in the Nuba Mountains Province of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. Tho work was started by Mr and Mrs W. Mills, of Auckland, and they were joined two years; ago by Mr and- MtS' D. N. Mac Diarmid, both of whom arc well known in Dunedin. The' British Governor of the Nuba Mountains Province recently wrote as follows to Mr , Mac Diarmid: “I would take this opportunity; to tell you how glad 1 am that the mission is able to extend its work in this province. .The mission at Heiban has amply fulfilled my expectations of it.- l As you know the original idea I had in mind in asking the ;■ mission: to- be allowed to come to Heiban was to get into touch with the particularly wild Nubas in the vicinity, and make them friendly toward the Government. They naa it in their mind that the Government was their enemy, but they gave sullen obedience because they are not strong enough to oppose I Government orders. Wo have to thank the j mission to a very great extent that the atti- i tude of those Nubas has now entirely ! changed. They no longer have any fear of ; the white man and Government officials, but ] on the contrary are extremely friendly.-They ‘iire now 11 easily administered and give the) Government practically no trouble. This is a very great stop towards civilisation, and the I mission have my cordial thanks for so much j facilitating the work of the Government.” j
