The chairman drew attention at the recent meeting of the Cook County Council to the satisfactory financial position of the council, there being a credit balance at the present time of £7OOO (says the Gisborne Times). Cr Bowen expressed the opinion that they should receive some interest from the bank on this amount. Banks, he said, were one-sided institutions. When the balance went against tho customer the interest was put on, but when it went against the bank nothing was paid. Whilst travelling by car on a clay rood north of Hurunui, an alarming experience befell a well-known New Plymouth resident who had a remarkable escape from serious accident (states the Taranaki Herald). The road was very narrow, with thick scrub on one hand. In endeavouring to turn, tho car was pushed into the bushes, but became stuck. Investigation showed that the vehicle was pivoted on the edge of a high bank overlooking a deep gorge. Assistance was procured from New Plymouth, and the car was speedily removed from its precarious position.
