Professor \V. N. Benson. Chair of Geology, Otago University, has returned from Australia by tho Manuka. Mr T. F. Cheesomau, curator of the Auckland Museum, made his fiftieth annual report to tho Auckland Institute this week. The jubilee was recognised by the presentation of an illuminated address and a cheque for £IOO. The Hon W. Downio Stewart, Minister of Customs, was a passenger for the north by the second express on Saturday. Mr J. D. Ritchie. Land Purchase Controller, returned to Wellington by the second express on .Saturday. Mr J. Ilisiop, Under-seerctary of Internal Affairs, returned to Wellington by the second express on Saturday. Mr J. A. Roberts was a passenger by the second express north on Saturday, cn route to Great Britain and the United Slates. Mr J. N. Miller, who has been ou a visit to bis parents in this city, returned north by the second express on .Saturday, on route for Sydney. Mr William Fleming’, returned soldier, has been appointed clerk and inspector for the Portobollo Road Board. There were 20 applicants for the position. Tho lion. G. J. Anderson (Minister of Labour), accompanied by his private sec rotary (Mr F. M. Sherwood), arrived from Gore by motor ear at 9 p.m. yesterday, and will leave for Wellington by the express train this morning. Mr J. N. Stewart, head master of Moray Place School since its inception, is about to retire. During bis 14 years’ oversight ho has maintained the high traditions this school attained as the old Norman School, and has by bis kindly disposition and toot endeared himself to all with whom he came in contact. The committee purposes recognising Mr Stewart’s services, .and invites those interested to confer at a meeting to be held in the schoolroom to-night. Mr W. Bowles, district-traffic manager of railways, and his family will leave Dunedin by tho express train this morning, en route "to Auckland, where they intend to reside. At the request of the department Mr Bowles will return to Dunedin in about a week’s time to resume charge until the end of this month.
