MORE HOTELS
FAVOURED BY ARCHDEACON. iEbon Ode Own Correspondent.) , SYDNEY, February 22. Prohibitionists have been somewhat, disturbed by the outspoken advocacy cm the part of a prominent Anglican clergyman, Archdcason Saxon, of more hotels. Tho matter arose over an application for the transfer of a liquor license at Cessnock. Supporting the application in court Archdeacon Saxon, ot Cessnock, expressed tho opinion that; there should bo more hotels at Cess-nock. He had expressed himself against the drink trallic, and the reason for his change of view in this case was that the crowding of men into tho bars encouraged more drinking, broke down their powers of resistance, and encouraged temptation. Coder cross-examination, witness said that if more hotels were built, it would lessen Urn temptation. If ho could get anyone to finance him lie would run an hotel himself. He added that he was not in favour of drink, but was interested in the man. and would do anything to help him. More facilities would lesson existing evils at Csssuock, but if there wore no hotels at ajl conditions would ho better.
The tench granted the application for tho transfer. 'llio Archdeacon's evidence was discussed later for the district, lodge of tho International Order of Good Templars, which resolved, after a. full discussion, that the Archdceacon’s argument in support was ridiculous. They expressed a protest and indignation, and decided to forward copies of the resolution to the Archhithop of Sydney.
