GRAIN YIELDS

SOUTH ISLAND ESTIMATES. BARELY ENOUGH FOR SUPPLIES. (Peb United Press Association.) . CHRISTCI-lURCH, February 28. The executive of the North Canterbury branch of fho New Zealand Farmers' Union recently decided to get estimates of yields of crops from various parts of the South Island. The figures were submitted ut today's mooting of the executive. Dealing with wheat, the chairman stated that the estimates sent in from brandies of the union were as follows: —Average yield expected, 33.5 bushels per acre, made up as ■follows: Ashbuvton 28.25. South Canterhurv 20.27, North Otago 21.84, Oiago .13.92, Southland 11,65. If the results wore as estimated, there would be about 8,000,000 bushels available, but making the usual allowance of 500.000 bushels, there should be about: 7,500.000 bushels barely enough for supplies. The consumption had fluctuated considerably during the last few years. Of the figures quoted 5.500.000 would bo available for individuals. 1,000.000 for sond. and i,000,C00 for fowls. lie understood there was not much of h'sfc season's wheat on hand, except that which the Government had. With regard to oats, the Chairman stal-od that the avenge yield was expected to be about 43 bushels per aero. This was about four bushels above the estimate of the Government Statistician. He considered the estimates would be iuslified, provided the weather did ot affect the yields.
