Dr Valintine. Director-general of Health, arrived from the north by the first express yesterday.. Mr Peter Barr was a passenger for Wellington by the second express yesterday. The Hon. R. Scott, M.L.C.. left by the second express yesterday for Wellington. Mr W. Emery was a passenger by the second express yesterday for Auckland.
Mr T. Somerville left by the second express yesterday for Wellington, where. he will attend a meeting of the .Master Printers" Association.
Mr J. A. MacDonald, who represented the Wellington Ypcht and Motor Boat Association at the recent Sanders Cup contests in Auckland, and is an ex-Dunedin resident, returned north by the second express yesterday after a short holiday in this city.
At the last weeklj' practice of the Dunedin Philharmonic Society members expressed their sympathy with Signor Squarise in his illness, and hoped that he would soon be able to again take up his place as head of the society. The 13 members and the manager of the Wellington representative cricket team passed through Dunedin by the express last evening on their way to Invercargill. They will return to Dunedin on Pridav for the match with Otago, which begins the following day. The death occurred on Saturday last of Mrs Sarah Moore, aged 88 years. The deceased. with her husband, Samuel Moore, who predeceased her about 18 years ago. were amongst the early settlers of Merton where they remained till old age compelled them to relinquish the strenuous work of farming and live with (heir daughter, Mrj Burrows, of 21 Hazel avenue, Cayersham. A social, dance, and presentation to Mr A. Pitfield and family were held in the Allantou Public Hall on Friday last. Dancing was indulged in and several songs and duets were interspersed. During the evening Mr J. Walker presented Mr Pitfield with a gold albert, Miss Pitfield a gold bangle, and Mr Pitfield, jun., a leather pocketbook. Mr Walker, in making the presentation, referred to Mr Pitfield’s many good qualities, and expressed regret at his departure. Mr Pitfield, in reply, thanked those present for their good wishes arid the presents that had been given to himself and family. Mr Pitfield, who has been blacksmith and ooal mercliant at Allanton for a number of years, has gone to Mosgiel to continue his occupation as a coal merchant there. , The Associated Board of the Koval Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music offers gold and silver medals to candidates at its annual practical examinations in local centre grades, advanced and intermediate, who gain highest honours marks. As the result of last year’s examination, Mr Lionel Harris, of Napier, pupil of Mr Irvin Moore, A.R.A.M. and L. has been awarded the gold medax for pianoforte playing iu the advanced grade. The three remaining medals cannot be awarded, as no other candidates gained sufficient marks. 'Due candidate .n Auckland and another in Waimate were only two marks each below the required level in the intermediate grade.
