TELEPHONE CHARGES
A REQUEST FOR INFORMATION. ♦ Tho secretary of the Dunedin Manufacturers' Association has written to tne Postmaster-General as follows: — 1 have to inform you thgt the proposed increases in telephone rentals and system of collection wore the subject of a full discussion by tiie executive of this association at a recent meeting.. It was resolved to request tho Government to defer instituting the proposed changes until such, time as subscribers and the general public have been given an opportunity to consider in full detail ihe factors which have led to tho pioposod increases, and in particular to satisfy themselves that the remedy suggested is tho proper on© from all points of view. To this end my executive respectfully requests chat the following departmental ligures be supplied to the association, and also to bo made public;— 1. The total number of employees in the telephone branch of the department in each of tho past 10 years. 2. , Tho number of connections in each of the same year*. 3. Tho total amount paid in wages and salaries to the said employees in each of the same years. 4. An analysis of the wages and salaries paid in each year, showing—(a) The number of employees earning not more than £l6O per annum, and the total amount paid to them; (b) tho number of employees earning more than £l5O hut not more than £2OO per annum, and tho total amount paid to them; (c) the same information for those earning more than £2OO but not more than £250, and so on in £SO rises, up to the highest salaries or wages paid. 5. Statistics of the quantities and cost of material used in each of the 10 years.
