MAORI PLACE NAMES. TO THE EDITOR. feint,—l think that, when Maori place names can lio authenticated and the spelling and meaning correctly ascertained, they should, where possible, be retained. One of our local names which I have hoard criticised is “W’aitati” (referred to .in a recent letter us “Waiteto"). I am told there is no such word in the Maori language. I have searched such books as I thought would help mo, without finding it, but found “Waitatuhi,” meaning “water near tho sea,” and wondered whether that is tho proper method of spelling tho name.
