LAWN TENNIS. CHRISTCHURCH TOURNAMENT. (Peb United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 19. The first day’s play in the ladies’ invitation tournament, which commenced to-day was of a very high standard and gave tho impression that the general standard of ladies’ tennis in New Zealand is higher than that among the men. The result of tho test match was rather a blow 1o the prestige of the New Zealand ladies, but Miss Macfnhme and Miss Hows defeated Alias Lloyd and Alias Gray, of the New South Wales team, and prevented.' tho tournament from developing into a procession of victories for the visitors. WELLINGTON, January 19. Martis has been scratched for tho Ruapehu Handicap, and Boadicea for all engagements ot the Wellington meeting.
SPORTING NOTES. Bx Sentinel. Cupidon bus continued to grow in favour for ihe Wellington Cup, and will probably start favourite. Tho smart filly Eighteenpence is not engaged on the first day of the Wellington meeting, but has been taken north and may bo seen out at Trentham next week. Glentruin was allowed to drop, out of her engagement on the first day of the Wellington meeting, but was taken north with the rest of F. D. Jones’s team. She is engaged in the Waterloo Stakes, to bo run on the last day of the meeting. Apparently Insurrection did not suffer any damage from his exertions at the Cup meeting as he is credited with beating Palestrina over seven furlongs at Trentham a few days ago, and has since been getting through serviceable tasks. It is understood that Roseday and Kerb arc both fancied by the stable for their engagements on tiie first day of the Wellington Cup meeting. Air A. Hill, course manager of the A.R.C., has been granted permission by the committee, upon tho application of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, to visit Christchurch and confer with Mr Luttrcll, the architect engaged on tho construction of the new Metropolitan trotting course, upon the lay-out and appointments. Rational’s disappointing form at Auckland is accounted for by tho fact that he injured one of his feet through tramping on a piece of scoria. WAIRIO RE-HANDICAPS. WELLINGTON; January 19 In connection with the Canterbury Rowing Association’s resolutions of regret that the Wellington Regatta Committee has decided to abandon the customary senior fouroared race at its annual regatta, the secretary of tho Wellington Association states that control of the interprovincial championship fours has this season been allotted to this centre, and the committee has decided to abandon the senior fours, which is a club race, in order to allow oarsmen who might otherwise be required for their chib's) senior crews to devote tho whole of their attention to the interprovincial race. Ho also points out that no Canterbury club has been represented in the senior fours at Wellington regatta since 1913, and that the Regatta Committee was considerably discouraged last year when, after altering its entire order of events to suit the Avon Club, that body failed to make its promised entries. AMERICAN GOLF. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, January 18.
