A little boy had a narrow escape from drowning at Cheltenham Beach (Auckland) the other day. While he was bathing a short distance from the shore ha was seen by a woman on the beach to be in difficulties. The observer called out to a young man who was swimming in (he vicinity and directed his attention to the boy. The swimmer hurried to the rescue, -the tad disappearing beneath the water and rising again as he made toward him. The rescuer was in time to prevent the lad sinking again, and soon had him in shallow water, whence the child was'able to wade ashore. JJeyond a fright he was none the worse for his experience. The necessity for a wharf at Whangamata was shown in a serious light by a councillor at a meeting of the Thames County Council. “They lost their Christmas beer through having no wharf,” he said, "ihe beer was put into a boat, and someone captured the boat.” The general all-round advance in the prices of stocks and shares ns quoted on the Auckland share market is very noticeable as compared to quotations of a year ago (states the Auckland Herald). The block Exchange is universally looked upon as a barometer indicating the prosperity or otherwise of a country, and, that being the case, there is every reason for gratification Jn the present situation. The rise in most investment stocks which set in some months ago, and has been well maintained since, is attributed in well -informed quarters to the better conditions reigning both in trade and financial circles. In the past 12 months practically every slock of sound commercial value has improved in price. Frederick Bullock, a former captain of Huddersfield football team, and an international full back, died at Huddersfield Infirmary from ammonia poisoning.
