WAIKOUAITI A. AND P. SOCIEIY

ANNUAL SHOW. The annual show —the tenth—of the Waihouaiti A. and P. Society was held yesterday. The entries compared more than favourably with those of last year, and, generally speaking, the quality of the stock and condition in which it was shown were a tribute to the district. The weather was on much better behaviour than it has been for some days, but a gusty wind could have absented itself with advantage. The largest exhibit was that of draught horses, of which there were several large rings of excellent quality. There was keen competition in this section, several wellknown exhibitors being strongly represented; Mr J. M. Smith, who brought a large string from Kakanui, was rewarded by wresting the cup offered by the society for most points from Mr J. Birtles, who scored 33 points against Mr Smith’s 46. The entire championship went to Mr A. Cullen's Lowmuir (imp.), by Royal Raeburn —Dunmure Mimosa, by Dunmure — Footjpnrint. Mr Cullen recently imported Lowmuir, who, given time in which to thoroughly recover from the voyage, should develop into an animal that will' take a lot of boating at the shows next season. Mr Birtles owns the mare placed champion. In this mare he owns a fine animal which pleased the judge, as, in fact, did all the exhibit. There were some good exhibits in the section devoted to thoroughbreds and ponies, but the competition in coaches and hacks was rather weak. One of the most difficult problems facing the judge in this section was the placing of the local lady riders. The best clashes were the 11 and 13-stonors and the boys’ hacks. The cattle exhibit was very fair. There was a good show of Jerseys, many of which, however, were more true to the dairying type than to that of their breed. The Friezians shown were, on the other hand, true to type in both directions. Mr F. W. Drisoolle’s two-year-old heifer was an outstanding animal in the Jersey section, and when Mr D. Wright’s yearling bull becomes better developed in the rib it will take ft lot of beating. The yearling Friesians were a particularly fine lot, and the winning animals would probably be well in the running at most metropolitan shows. There was not a great entry of Ayrehires. but there were some very satisfactory animals on view nevertheless. This applies particularly to the females. Mr Ireland’s champion is very true to type. The entry of sheep was small. There was quite a good showing of dogs. Mr D. Wright, of Palmerston, who annexed the special prize for most points in the section, had some good samples of the collie breed on the ground. There were many visitors to see the home produce section during the day. To stimulate interest, the society offered n special trophv for. raosf points in this section, and it was evident from the number of entries that the action had been justified. Mi a J. Maxwell secured the trophy, which is valued at three guineas. The competitions ’ evoked a considerable amount of interest, and some very fair jumping was witnessed. M'Cable Bros., of Palmerston, whose Puzzle won the high jump at the Dunedin show, qualified to hold the Waikouaiti Racing Club’s cup for most points in jumping for a year. Since last show the society has had a change of secretaries, and Mr A. Fell had his first experience in the secretarial capacity yesterday. He came, through his innovation in a manner that hod much to do with the smooth running of the fixture« machinery. Following is the prize list: CATTLE. Atrshires. Judge: Mr T. Barr (Owaka.
