DOMINION POULTRY INDUSTRY

EXPORT UP EGGS URGED. (Per United Press Association.) CriKIdTCHURCH, January 17. “If the poultry md.uiry in New Zealand is to go ahead we will have to get an export trade, and it we don I the club inigat as well close up and the Government experts might as well be dispensed with.’’ With mis arresting statement Mr J. B. Merrett prefaced some remarks on the dominion’s poultry industry at the educational meeting of the New. Zealand Utility Poultry Club. There would bo no development of the industry, he said, unless an export trade was established. He had been recently right through the North Island. Ju Auckland., they were producing as many eggs as they could consume, and more in Wellington. It was the same in Canterbury—they were producing more eggs than they could get the people to consume, and the price was nothing like a payable one to the producer. What had New South Wales done? Three years ago they coitiJ not produce enough eggs in that State, but it doubled its production, and was nowexporting 1,200,000 dozen to London. In New South Wales they were getting Is 6d a dozen on the local market. Of this Id a dozen was set apart for the pool, representing £4OOO available to make up to the exporters any loss on the export trade. He urged that dominion poultrymen should follow the example of those in New South Wales.
