ACCUSED REMANDED. BAIL REFUSED. {Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 17. Daniel Michael . Cooper and Martha Cooper were before the 'court to-day on charges of unlawfully detaining an infant, child, and the male accused was also charged with supplying a noxious tiling, knowing tno same was to be used for an illegal purpose, and were remanded till January 24. An application for bail for tho female accused was strongly opposed by Mr Macassey, for the Crown, as it might, he said, defeat the ends of justice. At various times four illegitimate children had been placed in the charge of the accused, and they had failed to give an account of three of them, and harl made contradictory statements concerning tho fourth. Besides, (ho body of a child had been found buried on the premises recently occupied by the accused. Under these circumstances, if hail were granted, there might ho very serious results. Bail was refused. It is understood that Mr T. Wilford and Mr A. C. Hanlon have boon retained to defend tho accused.
