The Ulimaroa. which arrived at Wellington from Sydney last week, disembarked 316 passengers, 572 tons of general cargo, and a' quantity of timber, with transhipments ex the Euripedes, Naldcia, Janus, Ormuz, Osterley, Mallina, Re I Italia. Balranald, Houtman, Orcades, Taiyuan, and Haugarland. Tho Waitomo was berthed at Port Chalmers on Saturday evening to discharge about 2000 tons of phosphates from Nauru Island. Portion of her cargo was discharged at northern ports. Tho Canadian Pioneer, which arrived at Pori Cha’mera yesterday from Bluff to load wool and flax, is the largest “mastlers” steamer of this line of up-to-date cargo carriers. Save for one slim tapering mast which is stepped immediately abaft tho navigating bridge to carry tho wireless equipment, this steamer has no other masts. The cargo-working derricks are topped from powerful samson posts. Masts are therefore not required for the working of cargo. The ’ack of the usual masts impart to the steamer a dismantled appearance, but appearance is no longer regarded as an important factor in the equipment of a modern cargo earner. The Canadian Pioneer, which ‘discharged at Australian ports, will probably ’cave Port Chalmers this evening to complete her loading at Lyttelton, Wellington. and Auckland. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Ruapehu, from Southampton, is to leave Wellington to-day for Lyttelton and Dunedin, where she will complete discharge. Steamers coming from India take a pilot on board.’ at Thursday Island to guide them through tho Barrier Reef. When the steamer arrives off Brisbane the pilot boat is generally waiting to land tho pilot. On this occasion the boat was not in savider.ee, and tho pilot had to remain for another three days on board before the Pinna met the steamer Havre, belonging to tho same company. The Havre was en route from New Zealand to Singapore, and had been intercepted by wireless. When the vessels met the pilot was transferred. Had a vessel . going back on tho route not' been met, the . pilot would have had a trip to New Zea-.,-iand. 7 THE CANADIAN SCOTTISH The Canadian Scottish is to leave Van couver on January 30 for Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide. TWO‘NEW EAST COAST LIGHTS. VALUABLE AID TO SHIPPING. Tho two new lights which are being erected on the East Coast will ,no doubt, prove of great assistance to the masters ot coastal and overseas steamers when sailing between Auckland and Gisborne (says the Auckland Star). Materials for both tho lights were landed by tho Government steamer Tutanekai during her trip up the coast from Wellington. At the Gable End Foreland, about 15 miles north of Gisborne, ft light is being erected on ft rock about half a mile distant from the mainland, and this, it is expected, will be completed in about five weeks’ time. At Oheno Island, in tho Mercury Island Passage, a light will he erected on completion of the work at Gable End and will probably be ready (or use in three months. Both the lights will ho automatic flashing lights, known as acetyleneacetone lights. Besides landing supplies and materials, the Tutanekai transferred a keeper from Castle Point to Cuvier Island, and look tho assistant-keeper at Cuvier Island to Tin Tiri Island to relieve As-sistant-keeper Roberts, who has been promoted to Principal Keeper at Farewell Spit lighthouse, 1G milc.s distant from Cape Farewell.
