TRADE WITH GERMANY
NEW, ZEALAND’S PROHIBITION. J ; ■■r ■ REOPENING OF RELATIONS SUQGESTED. (Peb United Phess Association.) \ ; WELLINGTON, January 9. . The question of reopening trade relations, with Germany was brought up at the '■ Chamber of Commerce meeting to-day. It was stated that New Zealand was probably ', the only British dominion that still pro- j ‘ hibited trade with Germany and her allies ; ” during the Great War; It was suggested I that the prohibition be now lifted in order to put New Zealand on the same basis as I the dominions and other countries. The- I opinion was esprassed that there were ade-v quate safeguards provided against un-a restricted trade by reason of the repara-.' w tions duty imposed on German exports and' Jj the dumping duty; also the additional-du£y-fi on goods imported from countries with' a - g depreciated currency that would be im- j| posed in Now Zealand, and it was not con-■ Tj sidered likely than the importations would • be on a largo scale owing to the uncer- ' tainty of the cost to importers. However, . after some discussion it was agreed to leave - the matter in the hands of the president - end Mr Martin to ascertain through the'Associated Chambers the feeling of the*-> commercial interests in New Zealand.
