ALLEGED GERMAN SPY
DISAPPEARANCE FROM CANADA. • The wide extension of the Imperial German spv system during the war has been revealed by the mysterious disappearance two months ago of Alexander Harvey May from Windsor, Ontario, just across the Detroit River from the American city of Detroit. M>y was well known in Windsor, where he was a prominent consulting engineer for a number of years. Hi® connection with the German spy system was entirely unsuspected. May had a long and chequered career in the British Army, including service under Kitchener in India, Later he served for two years in the American Army during the Great War in the double capacity of American officer and German spy m tho United States and Canada, covering Ilia tracks so skilfully that he was never suspected. He married an American girl at St. Louis, Missouri, nine years ago, ond in the latter part of the war moved lo Windsor, Ontario, where lie wae employ'd in engineering capacities, and became a prominent member of tho “Kiwanis” and other patriotic clubs, and was a highly respected citizen. Nothing had been heard since his sudden disappearance until recently his wife, wlio is in aistresaed circumstances, received a letter from May, dated Berlin, Germany, confessing that be bad acted as a German spy throughout the war, but that recently, owing to the activities of the Intelligence Departments of the United States and Canadn, he became nervous, and was compelled to return to Germany. Further investigation is being raado by tho military authorities into May’s career in Canada.
