ENGLISH BOXING. ARCHER DEFEATS BURNS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, January 9. (Received Jan. 9, at 9.45 p.m.) Archer defeated Burns, the referee stopping the fight in the eleventh round. Burns wae in a bad way and nearly knocked out, and the fight was awarded to Archer. Burns led in the first few rounds, but later was no match for his opponent. Sporting Life says: So far as big matches in England are concerned, Burns’s career is ended. He was decisively beaten by a lightweight. When the referee intervened his legs were giving and his arms were weary. The paper attributes his defeat to a punch which would have knocked out most middleweights.—A. and N.Z. Cable. ENGLISH LEAGUE GAME. PROPOSED TOUR OF AUSTRALIA. Press .Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, January 8. The Athletic News expresses surprise at finding a strong feeling against sending a Rugby League team to Australia. The ouinion in many circles is that the council should not decide without consulting the clubs, which contend that they should participate in the profits of the tour. The opponents of the tour advance another reason—viz., that some players who .make the trip leave a percentage of their ability in Sydney, and do not recover their skill for a lengthy period. Meantime the clubs are penalised unduly for allowing players to make the tour. On the other hand, if the League desires to maintain its intimate connection® with the unions in Australia and New Zealand, an interchange of visits is essential. The first consideration should be for the good of the game as a whole. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
