RAILWAY MANAGEMENT.
TO TUB KDITOB.
Sib, —I was interested in reading the e-' ccrpt from the Railway Officers’ Advocate in your yesterday’s issue regarding careful at tention re signalling, etc. I confess, however, that two local matters pass my comprehension. They may be explainable, but the safety of the public “stunt’'’ will not apply hero. (1) The Dnncdin-Mosgicl railway is a double line, with double line signalling facilities, and presumably with double line running advantages. Why, then, might the signalman at each of the stations lie required to manipulate two signals inwards for each train when ho cannot bring a train from the preceding station up to the distant signal, until the previous train is completely clear of his section. If the distant signal is no use, why use it? For instance, one train cannot leave Burnside for Green Island until Green Island station is clear of the previous train. (2) Can the department explain the single line portion of the Duncdin-Mosgiel duplication, which obtains just at the entrance (or outlet) of the Dunedin station?—e.g., an “out” and “in” train cannot pass one another over tho Rattray street crossing. The Mosgiel train, due in Dunedin at 8.49 a.rn., if running to time, has to wait outside until the 8.45 Invercargill, if a. minute or two late in leaving, gets across that single piece of track at the crossing.-—I am, etc., Q. E. D. January 6.
