WELLINGTON TROTTING MEETING. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 7. The name of Lucy Pointer (12yds behind) was omitted from the list of handicaps for the Wellington trotting meeting. Pete Peter has been ve-handicapped at OGj'ds in the President’s Handicap. POPULARITY OF RACING. From Our Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, January 7. In an articD dealing with t.ho magnetism of racing, the Herald says;.—"ln recent years racing, as tho most popular sport in the dominion, has developed to a noteworthy extent. It is surely an attractive pastime that draws an apparently easy expenditure of nearly £10,000,000 a year. That is the sum for stakes, totalisator investments, and general racing expenses for tho past year. For the racing year ended on July 31 last tho racing clubs of the dominion paid out in stakes the sum of £308,020 while the public, invested £0,154,851. There were 138 meetings, with 227 days of racing and 1792 races. In addition, tho trotting clubs paid stakes totalling £130,000, as compared with £35,000 in the season of 1910-11—a remarkable expansion of what is, after all, relatively a very minor branch of national sport. Details as to the number of trots and tho value of investments show that trotting is steadily gaining in the measure of expenditure and popularity. There has been no suggestion that during the Christmastide holidays the dominion had an excess of horse racing. In several centres of population the complaint is that racing was too severely re. strioted, and yet from December 26 till January 4 something like a nine days’ wonder was provided in tho form of racing as a holiday attraction. The number of race meetings was exactly double that of the trotting clubs’, meetings. Into that short period there were crowded 44 racing days, with over 300 races. Auckland led the dominion with seven days’ racing and trots, which attracted, ns officially estimated, an attendance of 112,000 spectator's. The. totalisator investments amounted to over £578,000, as compared with £652,000 at the corresponding meetings last summer. In citing the aggregates of investments at the holiday race meetings throughout the dominion during the holidays, it should be divided by three at least to make n reasonable allowance for numerous re-investments of the same money. This is a feature of race gambling that is ignored by the passionate reformer of tho people’s pastimes. The official returns of the totalisator investments at these holiday meetings show that £1,334,716 10s was invested, as compared with £1,489,293 10s in tho previous summer season at the same club’s races and trots. No fewer than 55 dificrent owners participated in the stakes for the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting, the amount being £29,000. The State, without taking any risk in backing winners, fares as well ns any of the multitude of race patrons. During the last racing year the Government collected £353,118 from the various meetings, and the racing clubs got £610,656. Tho amount paid in dividends was nearly £7,000,000. From now till the end of the present racing season (July 31) there will be no fewer than 83 race meetings, with 131 race days, providing approximately 1000 races. The trotting fixtures for the same period will provide 28 meetings, with 36 days’ racing. So there will bo ample opportunity to lose money on slow horses before the close of tho racing season. It is 37 years since the establishment of the Now Zealand Racing Conference, and it can rightly claim to have purged the pasfirao of many of its former abuses and objeclionablo features. Tho clubs are bound to devote their profits to their own improvement, and not to dividends for eager shareholders.” SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS. (Pta United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 6. Tho following will represent Wellington at tho New Zealand championshipe at Timaru: Seniors —D. J. Murrell, P. D. Edwards. A. Claridge, W. Hicks; intermediate—C. Claridge, G. Evatt, and Miss A. Imandt. AUSTRALIAN BOXING. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, January 7. (Received Jan. 7, at 5.5 p.m.) George Mcndies, the fly-weight champion of Australia, completely outclassed Kid Raymond, of Victoria. The latter ' was so severely punished that the referee stopped tho fight in tho sixth round, declaring Mendiea tho winner. , MELBOURNE, January 7. Jamito defeated Bei-t M’Carthy on points in a 20-round bout, after an uninteresting
