PROTECTING BIRD LIFE
AN AUTHOR'S REQUEST. A bequest. which will amount lo several thousands of pounds, has been left to ihc Royal Society foe tlio Protection of Dirds for the purpose of interesting school children in Iho protection of bird life (says a London paper). Air \V. H. Hudson, the well-known author and naturalist. who left estate of the gross value of £8225. directed that after certain legacies amounting to about £SOO had been paid, the residue of his property should go to tho society. The following note accompanied his will: — “The money I leave to tho society is io be used exclusively for Iho purpose of pro curing and printing leaflets and short pain phlors suitable for (lie reading of children in village schools. Tho leaflets are to ho composed more or less on the lines of (hero I have written f or tho society; each is (o he illustrated with a coloured figure of a bird, (he writing is lo ho not to much ‘educative’ or ‘informative' as ‘anecdotal.’ This. I find, is the easiest way to attract the chihl’s attention to the snliicet. The coloured picture, tho story told, excite that interest in and love of the birds which leads to their protection I think the society should print two or three leaflets of this kind each year, if not mors."
