FRENCH BIRTH RATE
SOME ASTONISHING FIGURES. While the authorities in the larger towns of France are preoccupied with unsatisfactory birth rate figures, there seems to bo no such problem in the devastated regions. Statistics just issued for the Department of the So mine show that, for a total population of 452,624 (being the population of five towns of the department) there were, from July 1 to September 30 of last year. 2459 births and 1751 deaths, thus giving an excess of births nt 703. Amiens, with a population of 187,056, recorded 140 more births than deaths during this period; Abbeville, with a population of 123,552, un excess of 167 births. The most astonishing figure is that ■wovided by Pcroime, which, unlike Amiens mid Abbeville, has been completely ruined by the war. Peroune has now a population of 57.553. During (he three summer months 457 babies were born among the ruins, showing an excess of 212 births over deaths, the highest figure for the whole department.
