CHARGE OF MURDER
AN AUCKLAND AFFRAY. (Ps* United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 4. In tho Police Court John Finnigan,'' 21 years ot age, ship’s fireman,. was charged with having assaulted Con O’Keefe and caused actual bodily harm. _ ' “ . A sensation was caused when ChieMetactive Mtuveney stated that the man.alleged to nave been assaulted nad died in hospital, and that he would withdraw the charge of assault and substitute one of murder. 1 • Accused was' remanded tui to-morrow.- ‘‘Bail was not asked for __ * Accused and deceased were firemen on tbe steamer Tredenham. There wassgmo drinking among tho crews ashore oh Ijlew; Year s Day, and an altercation occurred .be-’’ tween Finnigan and O'Keefe. It is alleged that at midnight, when Irxveefe was asleep in his" bunk, Finnigan polled him out on to the fidor' and kicked him on the heal}' and back. Finnigan was nulled off and the latter was put 'back in his btmkl unconscious. He remained so until the’ matter came to the knowledge of the officers next day, when he was sent to hospital. Last night an operation was performed on O’Keefe, who did not rally, andrOied at 9 this morning. . Accused denied any knowledge of the assault when arrested.
