THE HONOURS LIST.
TO TUB EDITOR.
Sir,— -In you leading columns this morning you seem to infer that Dr Pickerill is receiving the C.R.E. for work done as Director of the Dental School. As the heads of tiio Homo Science, Medical, Mining, and other schools have all done good work they should all receive the same distinction which would bo absurd. In another column it is stated that the honour is being l conferred for special surgical work clone for returned men and for this work Dr Pickerill might well have received a higher honour. You speak of omissions from the list—presumably in other parts of the dominion, as Dunedin has already had more than its share. It is difficult to assess the claims to a title, but at least one likes to think of it as dropping unawares on tile blushing recipient and. not as a sop to the daughters of the horseleech. Personally I am sorry that the old-fashioned method of purchase seems to bo going by the board as at least it had the advantage of' avoiding the difficulty of deciding by merit.—l am etc., \ Pam.
