STRATH-TAIERI SPORTS
The following concludes our report of the Strath-Taieri Caledonian sports held on Tuesday: The piping and dancing was of a very high order, the entries for . the latter being exceptionally heavy. An experienced authority from Home expressed his opinion that while adult dancing in New Zealand was not of such a high standard as in England, the juvenile dancing was far ahead of any he had seen in the Home Country. The gold medal for piping, presented by the late Mr D. Macpherson, formerly chief of ,the Gaelic Society, was .won by Mr O. C. Selby. Mr A. Mac Kay acted as judge. The programme was curtailed considerably in order to finish by train time, ?,nd some of the events were held in the local hall. Most of them, however, were despatched in the proper place—the open air. The Middlemarch Society has reason to be congratulated on its successful endeavour, and, judging by the unstinted applause which followed each item, Highland dancing must be very popular in that district. The following is the prize list:— Girls' Irish Jig (under 16). —ML Munroe 1, M. Gall 2, L. Budge 3. Girls’ Sword Dance (under 12). —L. Budge 1, G. Munroe 2, N. Weir 3. 100yds Consolation Eace.—D.
