WORK IN SIGHT

HARBOUR BOARD ACTIVITIES. The Otago Harbour Board’s engineering staff is not faced with anything extraordinary in tho way of construction in the opening of the new year. Yesterday work was recommenced on the railway deviation. The main activity in that connection is centred on Black Jack’s Point, two-thirds of which remain to be removed. A total of 23 men is engaged on this work. In a few weeks tho Sunshine quarry, which has not boon worked for a number of years, w'ill be reopened, the object being to obtain stone with which to treat the south endowment wall. It will bo remembered that tho wall was completed in 1916, since which it has stood well, showing little’sinkago. The wash of the waters on both sides has, however, had its effect, and it is now necessary to replace the portions that have been fretted away. There will bo nothing veiy big about this undertaking. 'J ho most difficult operation in sight is that of bracing tho mole light structure. For this calm weather is an essential, and the work will not, therefore, be undertaken until the winter. But in the meantime tho concrete moulding structure to “deck” tho concrete beams installed last year is being made. Work on the Leith canal gravity wall is to bo continued as usual. This job is going ahead well.
