FIRES.

MALICIOUS FALSE ALARMS. For some time past the local fire brigade has received malicious false alarms, but 1 evidently a number of irresponsible persons, in ' celebrating the New Year, find amusement in calling out the fire engines on purposeless errands. Such persons little think that property and lives are eu- . clangored should a serious fire break out while the engines are away in response to false alarms. At. 4.15 p.m. on Saturday a Central Brigade and a South Dunedin machine attended an outbreak in a shed, near the house owned and oocnpipd by Mr E. Amcomhe. which was formerly used as a stable at Ross’s corner, Anderson's Bay. Verv slight damage was done. At 9.44 the' same day the City Brigade turned out in answer to a malicious false alarm from a box situated at the corner of Naninr street, Belleknowes. On Sunday, at 912 p.m., the city and South Dunedin Brigades responded to a malicious false alarm from Elgin road, Mm-nmgton. Yesterday another malicious false alarm was received at 11.50 a.m. from a box at Warden street, Opoho. At 10.40 p.m. yesterday the services of the brigade were required at 439 Princes street south, which is situated in a terrace known as “The Willows.” The house was occupied by Mr Sims, and owned by Mr Torry. of Stafford street. , The fire was canted bv a candle coming in contact with the curtains, but the damage, was slight.
